I am passionate about helping powersports, RV and marine dealers and manufacturers grow and prosper. When not involved with industry projects, my leisure passions include camping with my wonderful wife and grandkids and fishing from my bass boat.
A well-known consultant and trainer, I have worked in the powersports industry for over thirty years. I began this career working in dealerships in various positions including Service Manager, Parts Manager and Sales Manager. An avid rider, I raced motorcycles for over twenty years.
Following my dealership experience, I spent seven years as a Technical Advisor for the motorcycle/ATV division of American Suzuki. Here I was responsible for technical training, customer relations, warranty failure analysis, and product research in a multi-state territory. I was also a part of the development team for the Suzuki Service Management program.
Next, I became the Polaris Distributor GSM for Western Power Sports. I developed the distributor’s wholesale and retail sales and marketing programs, while managing a field sales and internal parts and service staff.
I was recruited by Polaris Industries and spent the next fifteen years as a District Manager. I worked with the dealers in my district, helping them improve sales growth and develop business and marketing plans. I was responsible for unit sales, as well as growth of parts, garments and accessories sales in my multi-state territory.
From 2003 to 2017, I was the General Manager, Senior Projects Manager, an instructional designer, facilitator and consultant for Gart Sutton & Associates, Inc. I also conducted market feasibility studies and developed effective training programs and materials for many of the major manufacturers.
An experienced and dynamic speaker, I have conducted seminars and workshops on a variety of subjects for many different clients including the AIMExpo. I provide management training sessions for dealer principals and general managers as well as for individual department managers.
I wrote a featured column for the industry’s largest publication, Powersports Business magazine for several years and also wrote articles for Motorcycle & Powersports News, Dealernews and for other publications, both in and out of the powersports industry.
Currently, I am the president of SJ Consulting, Inc. and work as an independent business consultant and trainer for industry manufacturers, suppliers and dealers.
